Capsules vs gummies: which format works for you

Capsules carry the bigger dose. Gummies are the format many people find easiest to keep taking. The right choice is the one that stays in your routine, and it comes down to dose, sugar, absorption, cost, and a few practical points the labels skip.

Dose: what each format holds

A capsule is a small container. It holds several hundred milligrams of concentrated ingredient, so a two-capsule serving delivers a gram or more. A gummy is mostly pectin, flavor, and sweetener, and the active dose per piece is smaller.

Whether that matters depends on the ingredient. Food-level ingredients such as moringa leaf work well at gummy doses. Ingredients that need a larger serving, such as beetroot, belong in capsules. The per-serving amount on the label settles it either way, so compare products on that number.

The sugar question

A typical supplement gummy carries one to three grams of sugar or sugar alcohols. Against a full day of eating, that's a small amount. If you track carbohydrates closely, or take several gummy products a day, add up the labels once. For most people the sugar isn't the deciding factor.

Absorption: what the evidence shows

Both formats end up in the same place. Capsules dissolve within minutes of reaching the stomach. Gummies begin breaking down in the mouth. For standard nutrients and botanicals, no credible evidence shows a meaningful absorption difference between them. Choose on dose and habit, and let absorption claims pass.

Taking it daily is what decides

Supplement benefits build with daily use over months, and the research on adherence is consistent: easier routines last longer. A supplement you enjoy taking will beat a stronger one you forget.

So look at your own record. If swallowing two capsules with breakfast is already automatic, take the bigger dose and enjoy the lower cost. If bottles tend to sit unfinished, the gummy is the better buy.

Either way, tie the habit to an anchor you already have, such as breakfast or the morning kettle, and the daily decision disappears.

Cost per serving

Capsules almost always cost less per milligram of active ingredient. Gummies charge for the pleasant format. The better measure is cost per serving taken.

If pills are hard to swallow

Plenty of adults find pills difficult, and it becomes more common with age. If that's you, gummies are the comfortable answer, and there's no reason to fight it.

If you prefer to stay with capsules, two small changes help: take them mid-meal with a full glass of water, and tip your chin slightly toward your chest as you swallow. Capsules float, so that position moves them back where you want them.

Our line, format by format

We match each ingredient to the format that serves it. Beetroot lives in capsules, where one two-capsule serving carries 1,300 mg of organic beetroot with the dose printed on the label, because a meaningful beetroot dose belongs in a capsule. Moringa comes as gummies as well as capsules and powder, since the leaf's food-level dose suits every format. Both are batch-tested. See our current refund policy for eligibility, timing and instructions.

Shelf life and travel

Capsules are the more stable format. The contents are dry and sealed, and a warm kitchen shelf does them no harm. Gummies soften in heat and clump in humidity, so keep the jar cool and out of parked cars.

For travel, gummies win on convenience: no water needed, easy in a handbag or carry-on. Capsules travel well too. A seven-day pill organizer keeps a trip's worth tidy and is easier on the hands than a safety-sealed bottle.

A note if grandchildren visit

Supplement gummies look and taste like candy. If grandchildren visit, keep the jar on a high shelf with the lid tight, the same as any medicine.

Format-independent checks

Neither format signals quality on its own. A well-made gummy from a tested facility is the better product against an untested capsule, and the reverse is equally true. The checks are the same everywhere: a per-serving figure stated on the label, third-party testing you can verify, and a brand willing to show its certificates.

Which one should you buy?

Choose capsules if swallowing them is easy. The dose is larger and the cost per serving lower. Choose gummies if keeping the habit is the harder part. Either way, read the per-serving amount once and buy from a brand that shows its testing.
